Social Justice International offers a unique, professional online ‘Expert’ Support and Counselling Service in six key areas of specialisation:

The online Mental Health and Addictions Support service provides access to an expert who can assist and support you in relation to Personal Challenges, Relationship Concerns, Anger Management, Bereavement, Trauma, and support with Mental Health disorders such as Depression, Anxiety or Stress. Addiction support is available in relation to substance misuse disorders, gambling and other addictions. As well as support in relation to long term rehabilitation.

Our aim will be to explore your problems in order to gain a greater understanding of them and yourself.

Our main area of expertise is supporting parents who are struggling with issues in relation to children and young people. The parent may be struggling due to the fact their child or young person may have educational difficulties, behavioural issues, truancy, is being bullied at school or in the community, or are involved in gangs, criminality, alcohol or drug addiction, or their child is involved with the criminal justice system or has been a victim of crime, which is causing issues or pressures within the family unit.

Employment and work life can be full of challenges and can bring a wide range of emotions from triumph to despair. At different periods of our life we may also face periods of inconsistency in our work place or periods where we are between jobs perhaps through redundancy or unexpected situations which often can be out of our control. We at times crave change and sometimes dread it. Challenges and change can bring fantastic opportunities and they can also bring anxiety, loss and deep uncertainty.

We can help clients with a wide range of difficulties, long term life struggles, or events or experiences such as work related stress (including perfectionism, redundancy, harassment and, or bullying), low self-confidence and self-esteem .

At this time of high unemployment and economic instability across the globe, we can work with you to help shape a positive future, when things can often seem overwhelming, confusing or are upsetting.

You may be concerned about your drinking and drug taking, or the drinking and drug taking of someone else, who may be a partner, or close friend or relative. You may feel you wish to just talk to someone who will listen so you can discuss the problems you are facing. You may feel confused, worried, anxious, depressed and want to make changes to your alcohol and drug intake and to your life in general. We will provide you with the opportunity to express yourself, and we will be non-judgemental and respectful, and be supportive as you move forward.

Our aim will be to explore your problems in order to gain a greater understanding of them and yourself. You will then look at what you want to change and what you need to do to make that change happen.

Although a person’s sexual or gender identity may not be a source of distress, people who identify as being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning (LGBTQ) or + (being but not limited to any other orientation or gender identity such as intersex, or asexual), may find the social stigma of living as a minority, is a source of great stress or anxiety. Our professionals have experience and familiarity with the challenges that members of the LGBTQ+ community regularly face and this can be critical in assisting us to achieve positive outcomes.

Despite growing acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and gender identifications, particularly in Europe and North America, oppression, discrimination, and marginalisation of LGBTQ+ people persists. Coping with discrimination and oppression, opening up to family and friends, and sorting out an authentic sense of self in the face of social expectations and great pressures can lead to higher levels of depression, anxiety, substance use / misuse, and other mental health concerns for LGBTQ+ people.

There is much research which clearly indicates that youth who identify as LGBTQ+   are at an increased risk of suicidal ideation and self-harm, particularly when they also experience discrimination based on their sexual or gender identity. It is estimated that students at school who identify as LGBTQ+ are about 8-10 times more likely to experience regular bullying or victimisation compared to other students within a school community.

Discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ people may take several forms including social rejection, verbal and physical bullying, and sexual assault, and repeated episodes and or experiences, often leads to chronic stress and diminished mental health. LGBTQ+ youth and adults in the greater community may be subject to harassment, discrimination with regards to housing, employment, education, social opportunities, and basic human rights.

Note: This service is not suitable for those individuals seeking clinical support and assistance with regards to Gender Dysphoria, as individuals should register with a qualified expert psychologist / expert in this specific field should you need help.

LGBTQ+ individuals and couples often consider fostering and adoption as their first option to have a family. Foster care agencies are increasingly welcoming LGBTQ+ carers. Adoption within the United Kingdom (and other countries) is becoming more common, but with only small numbers of children being placed for adoption each year falling into this category. Foster care can often be converted to adoption or permanent care.

Increasing numbers of LGBTQ+ couples foster or adopt children around the world, and the research shows similar outcomes for adopted children regardless of the sexual orientation of parents

There are however ongoing challenges for LGBTQ+ adoptive parents and foster carers:

  • discrimination and stigma (perceived and actual)
  • lack of support (including from friends, family, the workplace, and neighbourhood)
  • having to adopt as a ‘single parent’ (in some instances)
  • a lack of role models and lack of access to similar LGBTQ+ adoptive and foster families
  • the expectation to be ‘perfect parents’
  • broader challenges relating to the contexts of fostering and adoption, such as dealing with agencies who lack knowledge about LGBTQ+ people and relationships, or having to disclose and explain their sexual orientation and/or gender to foster and adoptive agency workers.

Our aim will be to explore your concerns, needs and problems in order to gain a greater understanding of them and yourself. You will then look at what you want to achieve or change and what you need to do to make that happen.

What will the online support and counselling sessions be like?

Friendly, respectful, supportive, meaningful, non-judgemental and helpful is our aim in providing you with expert support and counselling. Embarking on anything new for the first time can feel daunting, so knowing from the start you will be supported can be reassuring. You might be afraid of what suppressed emotions will surface and worry that you will be pushed to say more than you want to. You might also hope that talking to someone brings relief, especially if you have been holding on to difficult feelings for a long time. Perhaps you are wondering how a ‘stranger’ might help or maybe you feel disloyal that you are not sharing information with those closest to you. It is not unusual for clients to at first feel undecided whether support and counselling is really for them or not.

During your first session, we will try and be clear on what you hope to get out of it. The success very much depends on the honesty and safety of the support relationship. This will support you in gradually extending and stretching outside your current understandings, as well as to probe and focus within yourself. We will help you do this by reflecting what we notice, asking you more about your experience and offering a non-judgemental space where you can really come to know yourself more deeply. This knowledge will help you see obstacles more clearly, which you yourself or others may be putting up, so that you can step around these problems more easily. This means that we first need to deeply understand where you are at now. This clarity brings wisdom to know how to live more fully, openly and with a deeper purpose and sense of yourself.
