What is Continuous Professional Development (CPD)?
CPD is an holistic approach taken by professionals internationally to enhance their skills, knowledge and capabilities, throughout their careers. Any learning activities undertaken by professionals for the purpose of developing and enhancing their abilities represent elements of CPD.
In many professions such as Social Work it is now a mandatory requirement for those professionals to undertake CPD, however regardless of industry, position, education and experience to date, every professional without exception can benefit from CPD.
A dedicated focus on professional development ensures that both practical and academic qualifications do not become obsolete or out-dated. The individual in question is able to enhance and improve their knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis through CPD.
CPD is portable and can be used internationally to show learning and skills obtained by the professional, thus enhancing career prospects.
WHY Certified CPD?
CPD training means the learning activities have fully reached the required Continuing Professional Development standards and benchmarks, and the learning values have been fully independently scrutinised to ensure integrity and quality leading to Certification and recognised internationally.
CPD Active Learning
This is interactive, participation based study to help you update and increase your skills to meet professional or industry standards.
This is generally, non-accompanied learning which increases knowledge, and can also include reading articles, reports, books, industry or professional journals or industry news.
CPD Reflective Learning
This is non participant based interactions and learning, which could include such activities as reading journals, newspapers, articles, podcasts.
Who can take Certified training in CPD?
Any person who works in a professional field or industry can take CPD, this also includes those who have experience or been acting as volunteers and wish to increase their skills for employment opportunities with an up to date certificate in a particular subject or area. Employers usually look favourably towards certified CPD.
How is CPD measured?
CPD is measured in CPD Hours / CPD Credits / CPD Units or CPD Points, these terms are used interchangeably, and different countries use different terminology, however one CPD Hour = one CPD Credit = one CPD Unit = one CPD Point.
Why engage in CPD?
Engaging in Continuing Professional Development ensures that both your academic and practical qualifications do not become out-dated or obsolete; allowing you to continually ‘up skill’ or ‘re-skill’, regardless of your occupation, age or educational level.
What is a CPD Portfolio?
A CPD Portfolio keeps a track and record of CPD progression for professionals and employees on an ongoing basis. Evidence has to be kept within the portfolio of any courses or activities. CPD Certified course certificates should be kept as evidence.
Professional bodies and employers often have a requirement to check and validate their members / employees CPD portfolio to make sure that they are meeting their Continuing Professional Development obligations. It is usually required that the portfolio should demonstrate different methods of learning and upgrading skills.
